A Young Boys Search for the Original Black Doctors

Doctors are important and save lives. We all know this and it’s hard to believe that it even needs to be said. At the same time there continues to be a serious shortage of Black Doctors that seems to worsen by the day.  I am glad to share my story of wanting to be a doctor since the age of ten with the world. It will describe the challenges of urban life, power of mentorship, the real challenges in our educational system and so much more. Importantly, it will introduce you to some of the Original Black Doctors. Some will be surprised to know that the first Black person got their medical degree in the year 1837. This is important for a lot of reasons, especially because it shows our youth what is possible. There are a lot of subliminal messages that tell our youth that they can not become doctors but with perseverance, mentors and knowing what has happended in the past it shows them that anything including a doctor is possible.

This book is great for everyone, especially our youth.

Dementia On The Rise In Blacks and Hispanics

I don’t know about you but this rise in dementia is very concerning. As a doctor who cares for this, this is very alarming. Recent high profile cases are bringing more attention to this disease. Many want to know why do Blacks have a much higher rate of this disease. Some believe it is related to our high risk of vascular disease,  socio-economics and genetic reasons.  It is predicted that over the next 30 years the numbers will be even more impressive.

As someone who cares for this population of people, it should be no surprise that this is a full time job. In addition, it is very expensive. One thing we can do now is lead healthy lifestyles and keep exercising those brains.

Men’s Health

African American men continue to have some the least desirable health outcomes. There are many reasons for this. I wanted to take a moment to talk about this because as a Black male it does concern me. Not to mention, that no one seems to be talking about it which should help to make things better.  There are many social reasons that lead to this but an interaction I had today help to remind me, just how difficult it is in many cases for men to find doctors that they are comfortable with. Comfort is important as we all know.  It has also been clear that because of our busy schedules many look to friends, social media and other non scientific approaches to help guide and advise their health decisions.  This may explain why commonly people with no symptoms

come to the office with blood pressure in the 200/100 range.  The real reason for this post is to remind all that the name of the game these days is prevention. It is critical to have someone in your corner partnering with you  for your health. Health is important, and your health is important to your loved ones and your community too.

Medical Marijuana Update

After a year now of having Medical Marijuana (MM) available in the state we have a lot of experience and things to talk about. My experience as a certified prescriber has been very good. Most of my patients have either had chronic pain PTSD and they all have done exceptionally well. There have been no apparent side effects. Most of all as they have told me, is they “have their lives back”. I have learned to let those that need the MM that there is no THC in some products so they can avoid the high feeling you can get with THC. This really seems to help alleviate concerns about this treatment option.

Medical Marijuana Moving Forward

Medical Marijuana (MM) is moving forward. Dispensaries are now receiving  MM products and making it available to the many people that can benefit from it. Did you know that these dispensaries pay an application fee of $4000, and there is an $ 80,000 annual licensing fee. In addition, there is an estimated $500,000 cost for construction.  So far, I am getting great feedback on the benefits. Some are seeing significant benefits with their pain. Pain levels are being reduced to level 2 from 8. These are people that finally are feeling better.

As you all know, the state of Maryland has legalized MM but the federal government has sent mixed messages on this subject.

There are many dispensaries finally open for business. Here is a quick list, but let me first say that there is one in Laurel on Baltimore Avenue:

  1. Bloom Medicinals: Germantown
  2. Herbalogy: Gaithersburg
  3. Potomac Heights: Rockville
  4. Harvest: Rockville
  5. Rise Bethesda: Bethesda
  6. Liberty: Rockville
  7. Herbiculture:Burtonsville
  8. Rise Silver Spring: Silver Spring
  9. Altpharm LLC: Suitland
  10. Haven: Brandywine

Continue to stay posted on this subject, there are currently a lot of new laws being proposed regarding MM.

Whats up with your Prostate ?

As men age most have to deal with some type of prostate concerns. The prostate gets bigger as we age leading to urine frequency during the day and night. This condition is called (BPH) and when needed responds well to medicine. Some may need surgery.

As men age, they also experience a rise in their PSA (prostate specific antigen blood test). The PSA also increases with prostate cancer. Lets not forget about the risk of infection known as

prostatitis.  Surprisingly, in some situations some believe that checking the prostate may not always be needed. In 2012, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended against blood tests that screen for prostate cancer because there was no evidence to support this. This is because many who will develop cancer do not die from it. A bigger concern is heart disease. Clearly, the former statement is a difficult decision and is made after  a lot of discussion on the benefit and risk of the situation.

The American Cancer Society recommends most talk to their doctor about prostate cancer screenings.

Important questions to Ask the doctor about hour prostate:

  1. Am I at higher than normal risk for prostate cancer?
  2. Would I benefit from prostate cancer screening?
  3. What are the risk of screening?
  4. If cancer is found, should I be treated?

Stay in control, stay healthy and spread the word about prostate health.
